Gingerbread cookies

1 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 cup molasses
5 cups flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cloves

Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and molasses. Sift in flour soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon and cloves. Stir until blended. Chill for 2 hours. Roll out and cut.
Bake at 350° for 10 minutes.

Some notes about this recipe:

These are the cookies you see in German Christmas markets. Make a hole small hole in the cookie before baking and you can make your own ornaments. You can use a straw.
