The Thunder Cake Challenge!

Hello everyone!

Here is my next challenge! I am really looking forward to this one! So, the question may arise, ¨What is Thunder Cake?¨ It is a cake that is mentioned in a story by the same name by Patricia Polacco. Here is a summary of what it is about!

It is a beautiful book and it is based on a true story. In the end the Russian grandmother reminds her granddaughter of all the times she was brave throughout the story. I love the illustrations and at the end of the story, there is the recipe in order to make your OWN thunder cake!

When I think of thunder I remember two incidents. One was when I was a child. When I was afraid of thunder, my mom would tell me that it was God moving his furniture. The sound didn´t seem so scary when she told me that. Then last year, while I was teaching my first graders, there was a nasty thunderstorm outside. They were really scared. And I thought of what my mom used to tell me. I work in a religious school so I have permission to mention God so I told them the same thing. ¨Don´t worry! the sound is just God moving his furniture in his living room!” Their fear disappeared and they began to laugh at the thought of God having a living room! But one student, who was especially afraid before, grabbed a chair, put it next to a window, climbed up and said, ¨Ï want to see God!¨ Even now, when I think of that moment, I get a bit emotional. He was being brave in that moment and overcame his fear a bit. His desire to see God was more powerful than fear.

The story and my incident with my student remind me that we can be brave even in the smallest of ways. If you don´t know the story, here is a youtube link with the author reading it. Thunder Cake

Like i said, I love the illustrations!

I have never made this cake before and perhaps you would like to join me in making it! You can make any adaptations you want but here is the original recipe.

It is short and sweet and I am intrigued by the addition of the tomatoes!

Here are the rules:

  1. Make the cake and make any adaptations you need. Please let us know what you did!
  2. Link your post with mine. I will be posting the link on April the second, which happens to be National Children´s Book Day in the United States. The link will be open for a week.
  3. Please include the Image of the Thunder Cake Challenge in your post.
  4. Have fun!
  5. Any questions, just ask!
